How Bowen Therapy Can Help You

The Bowen Technique works by communicating with the nervous system through acupuncture points and the fascial network. It allows the body's self-healing mechanism to rebalance and heal itself. It is appropriate for everyone especially the elderly, children, pregnant women, and anyone who has pain that is affecting their lives. If you have tried other modalities and still obtained little or no relief, this is a method that may help. Many people have great results after just 1 session, and you will know if this is going to help after 3 treatments done about a week apart.

The Bowen Technique is approximately 70% effective in reducing the symptoms of:

  • Back Pain
  • Whiplash
  • Migraine
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Sciatica
  • Jaw Pain
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Depression
  • Bronchitis and Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Bedwetting
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Back Pain During Pregnancy
  • Colic

There can be a significantly better quality of life for people with:

  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Cerebral Palsy

There are truly many more things that can be helped than things that will not be helped because this system relies upon the fact that our bodies always want to be pain free, healthy and balanced. Please call or email with questions and to set up your first appointment.

Tom Bowen, an Australian physical therapist, developed the Bowen Technique. He combined eastern and western healing modalities originally to help his wife who had asthma. The Bowen Technique communicates with the nervous system through a connective tissue layer called fascia and acupuncture meridians. As the body receives this information it begins to balance and heal itself. This method has been shown to relieve pain in all parts of the body, insomnia, digestive disorders, anxiety, colic, headaches, and allergies with about 3 sessions. For chronic diseases like Parkinsons, Raynauds and tourette's syndrome it is not a cure but seems to give the afflicted a better quality of life if done on a monthly basis. This modality is very different than what most people have experienced. During a treatment the client lies on a massage table fully clothed. The practitioner applies gentle pressure to specific points using a motion that rolls against tendons and ligaments. After a series of these moves there is a 2-minute rest while the body assimilates the information just given. The treatment continues with more moves in different places and more rests. Most people report an immediate feeling of intense relaxation and a release of muscular tension. The Bowen work is ideal for anyone who has tried many other techniques and still has pain. This includes children, the elderly and infirm. Many people have significant relief after just one session.

Jackie Otey Burson Cottonwood Clinic Massage Therapist

About Jackie

I have been a massage therapist for 25 years and a Bowen therapist for 15 years. I am an approved provider with the NCBTMB. After practicing massage for 5 years I began teaching at a local massage school. After teaching for 2 years I opened the Cottonwood School of Massage Therapy which I owned and operated for 10 years. I sold the school about 5 years ago, although I continue to teach advanced continuing education courses to professional massage therapists. I also teach what I call, "Wanna Be Massage" for those people who would like to learn how to help alleviate pain and stress for themselves and their friends and family without becoming a professional massage therapist.

I approach each bodywork session as a unique session for that individual using a number of techniques that I have learned and taught over the years. My intention is that each session leaves the client feeling pain free and more relaxed.

Testimonials

The Bowen Technique alleviated the pain of sciatica, and helped me recover from a sprained leg. I could see using this modality every week. Loved the ease of treatments, and the gentleness. A great opportunity to rest and recover. RGS of Denver, Colorado, 2012

I had just completed writing a book on trauma and abuse, which I had been working on for several years. I felt spent, heavy, and stuck in the energy of it, and needed something gentle to get that energy to start moving out. I turned to my friend Jackie, a Bowen practitioner, to see if Bowen techniques would help.

Jackie told me that Bowen was designed to help with injuries and old physical ailments that didn't respond to standard treatments. Believing that anything which helps the body helps the mental and emotional self, we gave it a try.

My first session was incredible. I felt a deep, internal unwinding. This was a great relief, as I truly felt wound very tight. I went through all three sessions in the prescribed time.

Both during and after, I felt much lighter and relaxed. My body and mind were calmed, and I no longer felt that heavy, stuck feeling. The Bowen techniques helped me a great deal in moving on from my experience, and I felt much better on every level. I loved the experience and how gentle it was. It was what I needed.

Megan Blalock

For 20 years, ever since doing a face plant off my bicycle in my 40s, I have been plagued with neck and shoulder pain and limited range of motion, all on the right side.

After three Bowen treatments, the pain levels dropped by over 50%. After two more treatments, the pain left completely, and now it only recurs if I overuse the muscles lifting weights or shoveling snow or something like that. When this does occur, I get a Bowen treatment right away, and the pain leaves within 24 hours of the treatment. The treatment is also relaxing and a side benefit is that is has lowered my anxiety levels by about 95%.
